Student Representative Council - Answers

In line with the La Trobe University Series, Assignment Help Era presents you detailed information regarding the most active Australian student political body – La Trobe University Student Representative Council. Let’s begin.

HISTORY

Student Representation at La Trobe University with the first Student Representative Council (SRC) being established in July 1967 and the more encompassing Student Union in 1971.

In 2006, with the introduction of VSU (Voluntary Student Unionism) funding to the Union was severely restricted, resulting in a loss of services and many staff redundancies. The Union was split into three bodies -the Guild, the SRC and LUPA (La Trobe Postgraduate Association).

La Trobe, along with Monash, was considered to have the most politically active student body of any university in Australia. The Communist Party of Australia (Marxist- Leninist) was a prominent organisation on campus, often with the cover of a front organisation sometimes encouraging the name 'La Trot'.The La Trobe University Students' Union is responsible for the Eagle Bar, Contact Student Services but its role has been considerably diminished as a consequence of Voluntary Student Unionism.

PURPOSE & VISION

The purpose of the LTSU, as described in its constitution, is to advance the education of the students of La Trobe University by The La Trobe University Student Union (LTSU) which is the peak representative body for University students at Melbourne, Bundoora, Shepparton and Mildura campuses. The main purpose of this student organisation is:

  • Enhancing the learning experience of students while at the University.
  • Promoting the interests and welfare of students.
  • Representing students within and outside the University.
  • Coordinating and supporting the activities of students.
  • Providing amenities and services for students, other members of the University community and the public.
  • LTSU TODAY

The current La Trobe Student Union (LTSU) was established in 2011 following the introduction of the SSAF (Student Services and Amenities Fee). LTSU incorporated the SRC, the Guild, LUPA as well as ISA (International Students Association) and MASO (Mature Age Students Organisation into one body).

Since that time, the LTSU has grown from strength to strength, re-establishing many of the student services that had been ripped away under VSU.

In 2017, the LTSU is a vibrant, forward thinking organisation where students and LTSU staff work together to help make the student experience at La Trobe Uni fun and worthwhile.

Recently, 2017 Marked the University's 50th Anniversary, and LTSU Celebrated through contributions of students and with special projects.
