Discussion on Social Policy in The Post-Welfare State

Social science includes the study, analysis and revision of the human services as a separate knowledge discipline. This can be considered as the discipline that study human systems, service technologies and scopes for social innovation that are developed in order to improve the lives if people in the society and people associated with them such as family members and the community they are living in. One of the major aims of social services is to improve the condition of living (Faucet et al., 2010). However, there are differences in thought processes among the subject practitioners.

As a result of this, it is often suggested that social services are responsible for promoting and improving the social lives and lead to social change. The basis of this suggestion is the belief that social service lead to enjoy liberation and empower people, changes their beliefs regarding social justice. As mentioned by Chenoweth and McAuliffe (2017), a number of people consider that the social services are dependent upon the principle of human rights protection and social justice. On the contrary, some ideologies suggest that social services are designed in a manner which aims at gaining control over the society. Whatever the aim is, Ross (2017), suggests to be content about the concept that social control is a highly inevitable part of social services.

As I believe, my personal values are influenced by the pioneered thought of Jean Paul Sartre where philosophy of socialism and existentialism has been provided importance mostly. Sartre’s has suggested through the theory of existentialism that “existence precedes essence”. In a simpler term, we give meaning to our live by just acting in a certain way and by existing. My beliefs have been influenced by this thought and I personally consider that there is no fixed design for a human’s existence. Therefore, every activity human performs has the core purpose of making people empowered and liberal. Additionally, the human activities require aiming at improving lives of people in every sphere of the society without any bias.

Applying these views on human services I have come to the understanding that it is the way to keep control over the society and make maintain order which are not aimed at empowering people of making their lives better. As mentioned by Jamrozik (2005), the core purpose of social services is tilting nowadays and being affected by the motivation for profit in place of providing services to people that makes their lives better. Media can be considered to have played and playing a highly crucial role in these biased activities. It can be stated that the reality is being created and destroyed everyday to change and influence the perception of people in the society. This has become a main purpose of the social services in the present era. Additionally, some business corporate are using the same philosophy of human service endeavors to further feed to the business interests along with increasing social awareness about the brand.

A book 'The Shock doctrine' written by Klein (2018) has demonstrated how the multi-billion dollar organizations are taking advantages of the social services for the business profit. It has been depicted in the thoughts of the author that at the time of any chaos, these business operators are likely to choose helping the emotionally and physically drained community people on the surface only for monetary gain offering human services. However, the reality behind this is taking advantage of the situation that community people are facing and increasing their dependence upon the organization. Therefore, it can be stated that this is contrary to the values and beliefs I put to my personal life. Keeping these values and beliefs, I consider that as a result of this capitalism, the social organizations that are striving actually for working through the purpose of empowering and liberating people are facing difficulties in getting state funds.

The focus in strategically shifted towards surface where there is no chance of improving the people’s live in long term. Additionally, it is also observed that there is a huge service inequalities observed which is also indicative about the bias of some social service offered. As mentioned by Gibson et al., (2018), there is a lack of uneven development within different localities which are not being addressed through the influence of political ideologies and the problems are being addressed through the “spatial selectivity” ideology of politics. This is also influenced by voting strategies which lead to avoidance and ignorance of actual social services.

It can be stated that the heart of human services it required to be the principle of social justice and human rights. Therefore, social services are not expected to use the motives of exclusivism and profiteering (Al-Natour & Mears, 2016). In order to make the human services effective and inclusive, it is required by the state to work with the private organizations that are truly devoted to offer human services to the people in need. The equal participation of the private organization with the government is required to follow it step by step so that human services can be spread equally to the people needed those for being empowered and liberal.

Conclusion on Social Policy in The Post-Welfare State

In conclusion, it can be stated that the philosophy influences the values and beliefs are responsible for creating the ideology for liberty and empowerment of the people. However, human services are used in the current days for the business profit which actually does not help the community people to be empowered or making their lives better. For achieving complete betterment of lives of people in the society, state and private organizations are required to perform together.
