Expert Response

Student response mentioned that there was effective communication between Katie and Monica due to the unsure patient condition. Katie discussed the patient condition with Monica to get the right assistance for the care.

Patient condition

The expert also discussed the good communication between the two nurses concerning the deteriorated health of the patient. The additional information in the report is that the expert mentioned that nurse utilized the Graphics obs chart to convey the information

The student report stated that Katie as utilized the effective communication skills to convey the treatment information to the patient and clearly explained why it is necessary to indulge patient in care. The study presented by Ringdal et al. (2017) discussed that patient participation in care help to improve the quality and safety in the care.

Patient knowledge

The expert report has also discussed the use of communication skill by Katie to convey important information to the patient regarding the process that will occur after the medical emergency team will arrive.

The student report also discussed the one of the ineffective interpersonal communication in the scenario that is about the issue in the handover that was transferred from Monica to MET Call team as it doesn’t follow the ISOBAR guide. The article presented by Eggins & Slade, (2015) discussed that clinical handover communication is very important to decrease chances of any omission that can lead to a negative impact over the patient.

Handover

The expert report lacks the information about the handover to the MET team but It discussed that Monica handed over with ISBAR.

The student report discussed the help that Monica has provided to Katie during the care. There are different section where Monica helped Katie like during Normal Saline preparation, assessment and time for medication preparation. The study presented by Jamshidi et al. (2016) indicates that student nurse generally gets confused thus they should consult the scenario with the colleagues to get the right opinion.

Team coordination

The expert report discussed that Monica has been explaining everything to Katie and clearly instructed her about her action concerning the scenario.

One of the issues in interpersonal communication is when all the health care professionals are speaking simultaneously without any coordination. The article presented by Chichirez & Purcărea, (2018) discussed that interpersonal communication in health care is important to deliver quality care.

Team communication

The expert report has not discussed anything concerning the issue that can occur due to the simultaneous speaking of the health care professionals. The statement of the closed-loop communication mentioned in the expert report was contradictory with the student report

Reflective Learning

After evaluating the case scenario I identify that there should be effective communication between the healthcare professionals to accurately distribute the patient care aspects. I realised that effective communication helps to convey the necessary information within the team to accurately coordinate in the team for patient care. The case scenario indicates that interprofessional communication is important to deliver quality care to the patient by coordinate working in the care process. Both the nurses in the case study have accurately communicated for effective care and it helps them to distribute the work that reduces the chances of omission.

I have also understood the importance of effective communication during the patient handover as incomplete data concerning patient health can lead to error in the treatment process that leads to deteriorated health of the patient. The case scenario indicates the carelessness of the Monica during the handover time to the MET call team which can lead to the inadequate diagnosis of the patient followed by wrong treatment. The report analysis also reveals that the communication struggle faced by the team during patient care is also one of the complications due to poor closed-loop communication. After this, I realised that clear and concise communication is important in the team to coordinate and work effectively during patient care.

Impact on Practice

This scenario has been an eye-opener to me to understand the importance of effective communication in the care with patient and health care workforces. I will try to improve and incorporate effective communication that will help me to deliver quality care to improve patient health. I will also try to improve the teamwork that is directly associated with collaborating with the team by using the right communication skills. I realised, as a nurse I must deliver the right care concerning the patient health status and this can be improved by effectively communicating with the right teamwork spirit. These two approaches will help me to upgrade my future clinical practises that are important to deliver quality and safe care concerning the patient condition with preferences. This assessment can help the nurses to understand the importance of interpersonal communication in the care that will improve their understanding concerning the approach to improve clinical practise.
