Clinical Leadership
Last night, a conflict arose between me and my patient’s family members due to miscommunication. The morning shift nurses did not inform the family members about the patient’s deteriorating health condition due to which the family had no idea that the member will have surgery in the evening. At night when they came to visit the patient, a heated argument arose between me and them that they did not inform them about the surgery and operated the patient. At this moment, my buddy nurse came to sort out the issue together, she calmed the members and asked me to explain to them about the severity of the condition and need for the surgery. As I got empowered with my buddy nurse’s support, I also explained to the members that the morning nurse tried calling but no one answered and the operation was performed with the consent document which was signed by them initially. According to Stanley et al. (2018), miscommunication happens due to the non-availability of family members, pain, anxiety, and physical discomfort of the patient. These factors act as barriers to communication, but with clinical leadership, the issues in the nursing workplace can be resolved. A nurse or buddy nurse with clinical leadership skills like active listening and others helps in building up trust in patient’s family members and empowering or encouraging the co-workers to speak for their rights and manage critical situations. If the communication is not proper in nursing care then it can lead to a risk to the patient’s safety outcomes or lead to disrespect to the need and wishes of the patient. With effective clinical leadership, the nurse can assist his/her junior co-workers to handle stressful and unexpected situations in the nursing workplace. According to Ibrahim (2017), if the communication among the co-workers and other health professionals is effective then the chances of conflicts with negative outcomes can be reduced. Clinical leadership involves monitoring and delivering evidence-based practice, assessing risks and improving the coordination and efficiency for patient care, and also for advocating the rights of the patients and co-workers. The characteristics of the good clinical leader are effective communication skills, behaving with integrity, helping and directing people in practice, being supportive, acting as role models or mentors, and inspiring confidence among the people in the workplace for positive outcomes (Connolly et al., 2018). If a nurse is inspired or empowered by the buddy nurse by sharing of ideas, knowledge, rights, experiences, set priorities, and work together for better results. A nurse needs to be a multi-task, use critical thinking, and deliver quality care (Ha et al., 2018). With buddy nurses, there is a variety of opinions and ideas and when two people work together, it results in increased confidence and high learning with improved patient’ care.
