Decision Making Under Uncertainty

This report puts forth an understanding of the case study analysis of The Neenan Group to evaluate and analyze their decision-making under uncertain conditions. The Neenan company was originally started as a small construction company in the year 1973 by Denver Colorado, which was later purchased by David Neenan in 1976, who named it after himself and transformed its operations to include the design-build industry approach for construction purpose. This transformation, enabled the company to gain competitive advantage and recognition in the construction industry through effective and efficient utilization of the design-build approach to its full advantage, thereby realizing significant revenue streams during the year 1999-2000. As of now, the construction firm is facing major issues which are having a significant impact on its operations and business activities. The report throws light on and identifies the issues in decision-making faced by the Neenan company. The issues so identified were mainly the lack of the organization to have a programmed system in place which took care of monitoring employee qualifications and licenses to ensure that they were qualified enough to work on the construction projects, because of which it was later found out that the authorized license to operate for an engineer had expired, thereby hampering the quality of construction work and the Neenan group was exposed to the risk of putting people’s lives in danger. Poor quality management procedures adopted at the construction company was another issue, hampering the quality of work and making the current construction projects relatively defective. This was so because of improper decision-making done by the group Since the company had been operating the same way since a long time without facing any problems, now when they faced them, they were incapable to deal with routine defects in work completion. As a result, the group decision-making process was ineffective to identify and solve errors in the construction process. The new design-build scenario brought new issues for the firm, in the form of no external check which used to take place in the case of traditional construction. The two main root causes identified were lack of employee qualification check and the competitive advantage model of design-build adopted by the company for the betterment of its construction projects. Further, the last part of the report presented a few recommendations which would help the Neenan group address its issues and concerns without hampering its current operations. These were system check of employee qualifications before recruiting them, independent reviews on the design construction process, engagement of insurance in review building and review of all the building construction work to find out and address errors and other issues facing the company.
