Registered Nurse Standards for Practice

1. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

I have worked on my written and verbal communication skills developed through essay writing, research writing, journal writings, and ISOBAR. Also, through interaction with other staff members, patients, their families, and caregivers, at the workplace. One of my responsibilities as a nurse assistant and medication administration is to provide care for patients, observe any abnormalities, document relevant information accordingly in progress notes and report verbally to the RN in charge. During my posting in the geriatrics department, I was taking care of the patient who had a drug allergy to morphine. I made sure the information is conveyed to the next nurse during the shift so as usual, I mentioned it clearly in ISOBAR and also verbally communicated it at the time of handoff (Bakon et al., 2017). Handoff supports the transition of critical information and continuity of care and treatment so I made sure a formal communication is done so the chances of error are reduced in giving the patient care. Over the years I have learned that clear, concise communication helps to avoid mistakes, save time, patients’ lives, and improve patient satisfaction.

2. Demonstrated clinical knowledge and clinical problem-solving abilities.

Clinical reasoning and rational thinking are addressed concerning certain types of thought that clinical nurses use in delivering quality care for patients that avoid negative impacts and damage to the patient (Fukada, 2018). I had once a patient in my care who had arthritis and at night, he started to have severe pain. I immediately informed the doctor in charge and at the same time, I used my clinical knowledge and problem-solving abilities and prepared pain killer morphine to be administered to the patient. The evidence-based strategy helped me to take care of the patient health. As soon as the doctor prescribed it, I was ready with the administration of the pain killer without wasting time. Resulting the patient got immediate relief from the pain. The clinical knowledge of the nurses helps them to make the patient and the family understand the disease problems, treatments, and interventions. And the problem-solving abilities help them to provide good care and save patient lives.

3. Demonstrated ability to work within a team.

It is imperative each facet of the interdisciplinary teamwork together for the benefit of the patient. I have always tried to build positive interactions with my team members that will eventually establish and build a strong relationship with patients. It is essential to be able to maintain and achieve positive health outcomes for patients through an active approach in a clinical setting (Babiker et al., 2014). I have increased my ability to identify when my help and support is needed by a patient or my team members, and to make appropriate referrals based on the goals. If I see a nurse sinking and getting overwhelmed with too much work, I ask them if they need help. I do not neglect my job but stand up and offer a hand when my work is finished.

In my clinical practice, I identify a situation when my colleague was helping a patient with severe abdominal pain. I realized that my colleague was struggling with the patient adjustment procedure. I immediately took charge and helped my colleague and ultimately was able to help the patient. I also requested seniors for a team meeting where we all can be taught the adjustment procedures in such situations. This situation made me help my team member and emerge as an approachable person to seek help.

4. An understanding of the professional, ethical and legal requirements of the Registered Nurse or Midwife.

In my career, I have always adhered to the technical, ethical, and legal standards laid down by Australia's Nursing governing body The Nurses and Midwifery Council. This brings recognition and obligation to fulfill my duties as a Registered Nurse faithfully and to strengthen my understanding of them. I would be expected to establish and adhere to my best practice, the existing Competency Standards, Code of Conduct, and all other technical, ethical and legal standards set by the Australian Nurses and Midwifery Board (NMBA, 2018). I was assigned to take care and advocate a palliative care patient and to support the patient and the family during end of life care. It is important as a standard of care by nurses in the provision of quality Palliative care and choose the best for the patient. The Palliative care includes advocacy and rising through ethical dilemmas and legal issues which helps a patient with the care, as the patient is unable to share their opinions and wishes. Professional advocacy can help many life-limiting patients and their families access the palliative care system, and guide their legal rights and ways to address ethical issues. As an efficient nursing staff can provide the best palliative care for end-of-life care patient, and can also support family members who are going through a tough time.

5. A demonstrated understanding of the role of the Registered Nurse or Midwife in applying continuous improvement and quality and safety.

I have always sought to improve my clinical knowledge and problem-solving skills during my clinical placements. I am always keen to learn which helps in continuous improvement professionally. My understanding of accurate awareness of a patient's history and current condition with possible side effects and successful administration of applied medications helps me bring quality and protection to clinical care. It is my responsibility to provide safety to the patient maybe it in terms of the administration of this medication or carrying out any procedures. For a patient's centered care, the clinically secure and successful procedure is paramount. I have always tried to maintain my reflective journals for continuous improvement. I recognized an incident where an incorrect dosage was given to the patient. Due diligence prompted an urgent evaluation for this case, and a positive management transition. I immediately informed the senior nurses and the doctor along with the patient family member. And a counter course to the wrong medication was started immediately. I kept on noting down the patient progress and the situation was reflected in my journals so that in future I do not repeat the mistake. A Registered Nurse 's position in improving quality is to recognize and resolve knowledge gaps through current best practice education to ensure patient safety and improve treatment outcomes.

6. A demonstrated understanding of NSW Health’s CORE Values, Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Mandatory disclosure and Collaboration with family

The nurses continue to collaborate with health-care team members from other sectors to provide appropriate services and increase patient satisfaction. That means working as members of the team in a multidisciplinary team to understand and respect holistic treatment strategies for patients. It is necessary to cooperate with Allied Health Services to ensure that the patient and their careers can cope with the ongoing needs following discharge (NSW Health, 2017). The members of the interdisciplinary team have to inclusively make an open, collaborative network of contact between health practitioners, patients, and their careers to ensure the quality of the treatment. The patient's distinct needs, cultures, occupations, particularly those with cultural/ethical issues that may emanate from a course of treatment. The role of RN is to recognize their rights and desires to healthcare and offer all available options for treatment. Quality healthcare empowers a patient care team, but it does carry responsibility and transparency. It is of paramount importance to use each member of the health care team to promote patient care inclusiveness; patients to be well informed and confident that the decisions being made are in their interest. Continued professional growth helps us to fulfill our patients' best practices needs.
