Thus, have an important role in the life of the person. The essay describes the positive and negative communication skills of the registered nurse using Gibbs's reflective cycle. Face to Face Communication: Positive Reflection

Description

One day I met the patient Ellie, who has come to the hospital for the regular check-ups. Ellie is suffering from cardiac problems and is required to come to the hospital for regular health check-ups. She is finding it difficult to communicate with the health care practitioner to describe her problem and situation. These things are disturbing and irritating her

Feeling

While communicating with her, I found that she belongs to the aboriginal community. Aboriginal people suffer a lot of discrimination in terms of health, education, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status (Salmon et al., 2018). I understand that she is having a problem to make other people understand about her problem.

Evaluation

I helped her in making things sorted so that she can set her problem. The main loophole of the situation was the communication gap between Ellie and the health care practitioner. Non-judgemental factors, trust, empathy, genuineness, and authenticity are some of the factors that must be kept in mind while dealing with the patient of the Aboriginal community (Webb et al., 2020). With this in mind, I helped Ellie in reducing the communication gap. I make strong eye contact and control my tone of voice to generate strong belief, hope, and confidence with Ellie. I used the active listening quality of the nurse and made myself a good listener in front of Ellie so that she can share all her problems with me.

Analysis

According to Sibiya (2018), Registered nurses act as the first responders to solve the issues of a complex humanitarian crisis, protectors, disaster, and as the advocates for the specialized community and the people who need help. I created a good patient relationship with her, gained her trust, show the feeling of compassion to her, and adopted written or non-verbal communication wherever necessary. These approaches helped me to properly communicate and develop interpersonal skills by involving Ellie in the discussion, facilitating the dialogue, understanding her beliefs and concerns, and communicating assertively. Moreover, Ferreira et al., (2016) opined that communication is the basic nursing tool that can be used positively to ensure the good quality of interaction with the patient. These things helped me to deliver proper and timely interventions to Ellie and also built a strong patient-nurse relationship.

Conclusion

From the above incident, I concluded that understanding the patient's problem and providing the relatable measure could help in delivering the quality output. The strong evidence of the adoption of communication skills is that I know that she belongs to the aboriginal community, with this in mind I ensure that the cultural beliefs, religious and traditional beliefs should be kept on a priority basis. With this, I am able to communicate effectively with Ellie. The strategies adopted by me is quit addressable and has also proved to provide effective communication and good health to the patient

Action plan

The adoption of positive communication skills helped me to understand and provide useful intervention to Mrs. Ellie. For positive communication, I made the checklist of things in order to make her understandable about the approach, clinical practices, and hospital policies. I also communicate the status of her background to the health care physician and housekeeping staff so that they can effectively communicate with her and properly for all future endeavors.

Face to Face Communication: Weakness Reflection

Description

One day I was moving to the cafeteria with my teammate for lunch. There I found that, on the table next to our, the group of acute care unit registered nurses are having lunch. These registered nurses were making fun of the patient who is admitted to the acute care unit as the patient was a geriatric patient and was unable to respond. I believe this is against the hospital norms and policies as it is affecting the decorum of the place. As a senior nurse, I moved toward their table, to communicate with them regarding the norms, patient confidentiality, and hospital policies.

Feeling

During the incident, I felt bad because the way the nurse is making fun of the patient is not correct ethically and legally. I approach them and talk to them regarding the same. However, the discussion with them went poor, misinterpretation, and overlooked. This creates a sense of nuisance and also results in the involvement of senior management to look into the matter.

Evaluation

I should handle the situation properly and I must communicate with the nurses properly and efficiently. Good communication between colleagues is an essential component of professionalism (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2015). Due to my inferior quality of the communication gap, the incident took a negative platform. According to Sibiya (2018), clear communication means the information, beliefs, and perspective of one person is clearly understood by the other. However, in this situation, my skills of communication were not used properly and evidently and the message was misinterpreted.

Analysis

The situation can be controlled and better if I adopt good communication measures. My intention was not to hurt anyone or complain to anyone but due to weak communication, misunderstanding arises. This leads to the incorporation of the top management person to solve the issue.

Conclusion

From the above discussion, I felt that incident arise because of my communication weakness. I have to work on strengthening my communication skills so that I can overcome all the barriers to bad communication. Effective communication is a good approach for managing the issues in the health care setting (Wang et al., 2018).

Action Plan

For the future commencement of my work, I ensure that I will attend the interactive intervention workshops so that I can adapt new and good communication measures. Group discussion, experience exchange, seminars, workshops, and conferences will help in learning communication skills (Dithole et al., 2017). Along with this, qualitative assessment and analysis should be incorporated so as to check for the regular feedback and also check the quality of communication adaptability.

Conclusion

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that communication skills are the part of life that need to be properly managed by the individual in the workplace, office, personal life, and another societal platform. The registered nurse or any other healthcare practitioner must adopt the positive attributes while face to face communication with the patient. These attributes help in developing good patient-nurse relationship, understanding patient-beliefs, and providing good patient care. However, in some situations, any barriers come across while dealing with the patient and other colleagues that affect the level of communication and misunderstanding of the thoughts. Going forward, communication basic “TUS” i.e. think, understand, and speak must be incorporate in daily life to implement good communication with people.
