Introduction to Emotions and Emotional Intelligence

Emotions refer to the feelings that will affect the behaviour of a person. The person has both types of feelings either positive or negative. The term emotional intelligence means the ability of the person to identify the feelings of their own and others also. Emotions are complex process so it is an important concept to understand the feelings very carefully to influence other people. The reflective report is presented on the topic of Emotions and Emotional Intelligence.

Report

Emotions are the complex feelings of an individual which determines his/her behaviour. The feelings of a person may be positive or negative towards different aspects. As the feelings of human beings are related to the nervous system also, so it determines the actions and thinking skills of an individual. The positive feelings refer to the desirable or favourable situations which make and individual pleasant. And the term negative emotions mean the undesirable conditions or feelings which will create restlessness among the individuals. The negative emotions are not the bad feelings they are the feelings which occur if the situations are not according to the person’s wish or maybe the difficult conditions faced by the individuals create the problem or negative changes in the behaviour of an individual (Oakley, 2020). So the term used to check the ability to recognize the emotions of an individual or others is known as emotional intelligence. The study of person’s feelings and fears is known as intrapersonal intelligence, whereas the ability to recognize the fears and feelings of other person is known as interpersonal intelligence (MacIntyre, & Vincze, 2017). There are different models prepared for measuring the ability of the individual to check their feelings.

Reason

Emotions mean the state of mind of an individual which may be happy or unhappy because there are various objective and subjective situations which stimulate the behaviour of an individual. Therefore emotions play a major role in the life of a person either a child or an adult. The mature person has more stable emotional intelligence because their feelings will not disturb with little stimuli. They will not get disturbed or behaviour will not affect with little change in feelings and fears of people and object (Butler, 2017 p130). Also, education is one of the important factors to promote emotional intelligence. Teachers and parents both contribute their best in developing the children’s emotions so that they can select a suitable method to express their emotions according to the situation. The emotions are linked to the theory of experience as well as the positive experience is good for wellbeing and health whereas the negative experience is bad for an individual. The person having more experience of life will have higher emotional intelligence. Because it is considered that person who is having greater emotional intelligence will have more improved mental health and a person of good mind will work more efficiently in the organization and as well as for society too. The important task of management is to manage the emotional intelligence of the employees working in an organization because the happy faces work more effectively and efficiently. They have a stable behaviour and nature which will reduce the chance of disputes in the organization because the person having less emotional intelligence may face anger and frustration which cause diseases like hypertension and cancer. In an organization, the leader and team must have positive emotional intelligence because a leader is a person who influenced their subordinates. After all, the behaviour of a leader stimulates their subordinates. So if the leader has a negative emotional intelligence then it will create a frustrating environment in the organization and increases the employee turnover. The models are designed on different traits like the focus of ability model is on individual’s ability that how a person processes the emotional information and use it in the society (Gutiérrez-Cobo, Cabello & Fernández-Berrocal 2017). The emotions are expressed differently according to their moods and feelings like when a person is happy then they have a smile over their face and after seeing the crying face of a person anyone can easily identify that he is sad. The person shows its feelings through gestures and expressions but each person does not need to show the same expression for the same situation. Like some people smile when they are uncomfortable and some will cry when they are extremely happy. So the way of expressing the emotions and feelings of each person is different and depend upon its habits and behaviour (De Houwer & Hughes, 2019). There are four factors which will influence the feelings and behaviours of individual are psychological, social, cultural and personal. The psychological factors are those which are related to the mindset of an individual like perception, attitudes and beliefs etc. The social factors consist of family, groups, status and roles of people. The personal components are those which are created by the person itself like age, lifestyle, personality etc. And the cultural factors include the components such as the social class system, subculture etc.

Reconstruct

The emotional intelligence is constructive and also negative for the people because it is of two types: positive and negative both. The positive emotions have a stronger impact over the behaviour of an individual whereas negative emotions also impact the individual but not in a positive way. Therefore with the help of positive emotions the individual can use the emotional intelligence for improvements. If the person has positive feelings or emotion then only he can work with his best efficiency. Each feeling will have an impact over the behaviour of an individual but not only the feelings, the family and the society also contribute for promoting the positive relationships among individuals which makes people happy (Zou, Su & Wang, 2018 p2651). Happy people will have good mental and physical health. If the person has control over their feelings or they are self-aware about their feelings then it will be easy to them for understanding the emotions and gestures of another person and act accordingly. It will reduce the chances of negative emotions and spread more positive vibes in the society.

Self- Awareness Reflection

There are different areas of improvement on which we have to focus on emotional intelligence. The children’s emotional balance may be taken into consideration by providing education to children about expressing and controlling their emotions because it disturbs them in the learning process as well. An artificial situation of unpleasant emotions must be presented in front of children so that they can face the realistic situation intelligently. Because during the state of extreme happiness and sadness, the person is not able to take any decision and also it becomes difficult for them to study. The development of emotional intelligence will also depend upon internal and external factors for achieving interpersonal development, self emotional skills and management efficiency skills (Klein, Renshaw & Curby, 2016). The person must have good emotional intelligence because after that he will be able to communicate their views, opinions and needs in the right way and right time. The person should not immediately react to any conflict. They have to calm during the situation of stress and take decision with a calm mind to resolve the conflicts. Self-awareness is also important for emotionally intelligent people; if a person is aware of his thoughts then they can understand the feelings and gestures of other people.

Conclusion on Emotions and Emotional Intelligence

The report shows that emotional intelligence plays a vital role in an individual’s life because it works as a strong force for spreading positive feelings towards society. There are different ways to improve the emotional intelligence which we mention in the report and also discuss the various areas for improvement of emotional intelligence. Also, the positive emotional intelligence will improve the mental health and wellbeing of an individual.
