Introduction to Economic Circumstances in Canada

The aim of the essay is to analyze the article “Task Force on Aging Should Focus on Generation Squeeze”, by Paul Kershaw. According to Paul Kershaw, it is not fair for the Canadian government to spend more on Canadians aged 65 and older than on those in Generation Squeeze. The report will identify why this is not fair to spend more on old aged people of Canada. It will focus on the importance of spending more on younger Canadian generation.

Discussion on Economic Circumstances in Canada

It is true that it is not fair for the Canadian government to spend more on Canadians aged 65 and older than on those in Generation Squeeze. According to Kershaw 2018, seniors in Canada are today one of the most comfortable and richest people in the country. The author has found that the old aged people gets discount in almost everything. While travelling to Hungary the author had found that people aged 65 and over were free to use the Budapest transit systems. Everything from incidental fee to taxes for old aged people is cheap (Kershaw 2018). It is fair to provide facilities to those senior who are poor. But due to spending more and providing discount to senior citizen is unfair if we compare it with younger generation. The senior poverty rate in the country is almost half to that of Canadians that are of working age.

Younger generation is facing lots of social as well as economic problems as compared to older generation. Older generation have better facilities and policies. Due to this inequality by Canadian government between older people and younger generation the population of people aged from 15 to 24 has fallen to 13 per cent in 2011 from 1971 and it is predicated that it will fall to 11 per cent to 2031. The unemployment rate of people from age 15 to 24 was 11 per cent in 2018 (Statistics Canada n.a). The young generation are facing challenges in getting jobs in spite of being well qualified and suitable for the job. Whereas the employment rate in senior men and women has increased year by year. The government of Canada has various plans for the older generation like ensuring financial security, access to benefits, services and information for seniors, combatting elder abuse, enabling them to actively participate in community and labor force, and many more. According to the government of Canada, every fourth person in 2030 will be a senior citizen which is the reason why the government is focusing more on spending for old age people. However, neglecting the younger generation is not fair (Government of Canada 2019). They are facing problem almost in everything including erosion of income, rising housing prices as well as environment degradation. Older generation are provided with high salaries, allowance, discounts in products and services, GIS (Guaranteed income supplement), old age security pension and many more (Government of Canada 2019).

Observing the growth in the population of old age people in Canada, it is important to make plans and strategies for their better future but for doing this, degrading and ignoring the requirement and benefits of younger generation is not appreciable. Maintaining a balance between these two generation is important. Canada has large portion of young generation population in spite of that this generation is facing inequality in various sectors. The current population of older generation is 17.5 per cent in Canada and most of people aged 80 and over are found to be rich (Kershaw 2018). Observing the current conditions of young generation in Canada, it is clear that the focus of Canada government is less on this generation. It is required that the Canadian government should also make plans and policies for the younger generation so that they can also get equal facilities and benefits as the older generation as getting (Tomaszczyk and Worth 2018).

It was found that younger Canadians are facing problems which include less time, higher housing costs, lower incomes and a deteriorating environment. The report has argued that is it is not fair for the Canadian government to spend more on Canadians aged 65 and older than on those in Generation Squeeze. I agree with this statement as government of Canada has future strategies and plan for improving the future of older generation. Older generation is provided with benefits while younger generation has to face problems in various sectors.
