Strengths Based Nursing and Healthcare

Family involvement in nursing is considered a positive thing as it gives positive results. In this assessment, the advantages of involving the family in nursing care are discussed and two tools which can be used for this are critically evaluated.

Promotion of family involvement in nursing care means a family of the diseased individual is also given a chance for active involvement in the healthcare system so that the healthcare services and the health of the patient could get improved with the help of collaboration made with the healthcare professionals. By doing so, many changes can be made in healthcare such as transparency in decision making can be maintained and quality of care which is given to the patient is also enhanced. The needs of the patient are more closely looked at and this ultimately benefits the patient (Mackie, Mitchell and Marshall 2018). Family of the patient can facilitate in overcoming the feeling of vulnerability in the diseased individuals who are admitted to the hospitals and can also help them transition to the setting. It has been found that family involvement has a direct impact on the patient's health which is positive in nature (Goodridge et al. 2018). This type of practice in nursing involves giving and receiving feedback and learning about patient experiences. The insights, expertise and valuable perspective of the patient family could be helpful in bringing alterations in the healthcare too. It has also seen that that quality of life of the patient also gets enhanced by this approach (Prior and Campbell 2018). Therefore, nurses can help in healthcare promotion by taking help from the patient family so that holistic care is given to the patient.

One of the tools which are used in guiding a family strengths conversation is Australian Family Strength Nursing Assessment guide (AFSNA). This can be utilized for starting the conversation with any member of the family that looks for the family and can support and encourage the family. There are some questions provided in this guide which generally talks about togetherness, sharing of activities, affection, support, acceptance, commitment, resilience and communication within the family. By asking these questions, nurses can gain knowledge about the family and can also inform other family members that what an individual can offer so that unity can develop within the family. This helps in creating a feeling of connectedness with each other. AFSNA also helps in recognizing the strength of the family and therefore, could help families to bond together with the help of nurses (Smith and Ford 2013). Therefore, this practice could be used in the practice of nursing, nursing education and in daily life as it promotes the making of healthy relationships in times of crisis or difficulties. However, this practice does not lay attention on a care plan that is given to the patients but is only focused on the family members and their bonding (Smith and Ford 2013).

The other tool was One Question Question (OQQ). This intervention was designed to know the family members need and concerns with respect to conversations which are therapeutic. By this approach, the family members tell their deepest concerns to the nurses which result in using an assessment question in the form of an interventive question. This tool also helps in gathering the knowledge about the families underlying requirement which facilitates in avoiding the error in family nursing. This kind of tool is very much crucial for clinical contexts where time is regarded as a constraining factor in conducting an assessment of the family. In addition to that, the question can be used in some other context such as to identify the major challenges or concerns which are related to the topic. However, this practice is useful in nursing but sometimes some of the families have contrasting beliefs which create difficulty for the nurses in working with these types of family. Nurses could not correctly assess the situation and therefore this approach is not used appropriately like it should be (Duhamel et al. 2009).

The communication between nurses and the patient and the family generally affects the wellbeing of the patient and helps in providing quality outcomes in the care which is given by the nurses. The relationship which is set between the nurses and the patient and the family impacts the satisfaction of the care. It also helps in setting relationships which are therapeutic in nature between all the concerned parties. With that, positive interactions take place and the barriers are usually overcome. With that, it also helps nurses in finding what more could be done so that communication could improve between the patient and his family and the caregiver. 

In conclusion, it can be said that promoting family involvement is beneficial for patient outcome. It could help in delivering better quality care which will enhance the satisfaction of the patient and his family too. AFSNA and OQQ can be used successfully in nurturing the relationship between the nurses and the family of the diseased individual and thus will provide more positive results.
