Communicating for Empathic Understanding
Today I am here to present the presentation related to the Carly case and how the communication can be improved to increase the understanding of the patient by improving empathy.
The empathy gap that has been identified in the case study is the violence and abuse faced by Carly that has directly limited her understanding concerning the other individual. She has faced domestic violence and abuses which lead to her present condition. The empathy gap identified can be improved by utilizing the effective communication skills that will help the health care professional to improve empathy in the care. Effective communication is important to solve the problem by accurately judging the situation to improve the level of satisfaction of life of the patient (Ledema et al. 2019). Effective communication utilizes the visual, auditory and linguistic approach to improve the interaction. Different principles are important for effective communication includes empathy, active listening, questioning skills posture and eye contact. Effective communication utilizes the spoken, non-verbal aspect of communication to improve the two-way interaction in the care. Effective communication help to reduce the communication barriers that are important to increase the understanding concerning the patient issue that is important to improve the treatment process (Skarbalienė et al. 2019). Carly habit of substance abuse is one of the major complications that are faced by her and it has increased the complication concerning the physical as well as mental health. There is a need to improve communication with the patient to understand the issue that is important to assist her and reduce her substance abuse habit to improve her health status. She also has attempted suicide two times thus need to communicate the issue to improve her mental status.
The Carly pre-existing values indicate the Greek Macedonian cultural and her mother also a drug abuse that leads to death due to brain cancer. Her family background reveals that there is some negative experience she has experienced like domestic violence relationships and different abuse that lead to the increased vulnerability to acquire the habit of substances abuse. She also faced 2 violent episodes of home invasion corresponding to the involvement in the drug dealing and she also work as a sex worker to bear her drug expenses. The medical history of the Carly reveals that she has diagnosed with the psycho Affective Disorder and previously she has also diagnosed with the complex PTSD and Bipolar disorder. She is also reluctant to take Abilify that is prescribed to her but she is currently taking Risipiradon and Lexapro. These findings reveal that there is a need for right communication with Carly to help her is improving her physical as well as mental health that is important for the overall wellbeing.
The two communication skills that are important to address the Carly issue and improve her wellbeing includes cultural competent communication to respect her perspective in the care followed by the use of therapeutic communication to improve her medicine adhered. The different cultural background of Carly needs to be considered while communication to improve the understanding that will be addressed by the cultural competent communication by adding empathy in conversation. The study presented by Kaihlanen et al. (2018) added that cultural competent communication is important to respect and understand the different cultural belief of the individual to improve the competency in care. The cultural competent communication helps the health care professionals to coordinate with the patient to tailor the care concerning the cultural values and belief to improve patient adherence to the care. Therapeutic communication is considered to be a key skill of the health care professionals as it helps to improve conversation with the patient to improve the rapport. Carly is not following the prescribed medicine and there is a need to explain the importance of medication by communicating empathically. The study presented by Abdolrahimi et al. (2018) added that therapeutic communication is important to use verbal and nonverbal communication strategies to improve the conversation. Therapeutic communication helps to increase patient participation in the care that is important to improve the wellbeing of the patient. These communication strategies will help to improve the empathy in the conversation that is important to help Carly to improve the physical and mental wellbeing by increasing adherence to the medication. The right communication strategies will help to improve the rapport with Carly so that proper assistance can be provided to address her issue.
